The knockout stages of the Champions League 2021-2022

After a huge controversy, we now know the round of 16 of the final phase of the Champions League 2021-2022. Following an error concerning hats for the round of 16 draw of the 2021-2022 Champions League, the draw had to be redone.

The error came from a problem with the arrangement of the balls in each pot. When drawing the opponent from Villarreal, it was the name of Manchester United that came out. A first mistake, since Villarreal and United could not face each other, having played in the same group in the previous round. Manchester United’s ball was therefore discarded. A few minutes later, Atlético de Madrid drew the name of Bayern Munich, and the ball of Manchester United was missing. An error disputed by the Spanish champion, who asked UEFA to redo the Europa League following this gross error.

The draw therefore took place a second time in its entirety, and the real Madrid did not hide his anger. For good reason, the meeting Real Madrid-Benfica had been drawn before the error, and the Spanish club asked to keep their opponent. But the people of Madrid did not win their case, and drew a much stronger rival in the second draw: the Paris Saint Germain.

PSG, which had inherited the Manchester United of Cristiano Ronaldo in the first draw, will eventually face the Real Madrid of Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior. A complicated draw for the two French clubs, since Lille, who had drawn Chelsea in the first draw, also fell on the European champion during the second time.

After the serious error of the first UEFA draw, the European body decided to redo the draw for the knockout stages of the Champions League in its entirety. Start of the draw at 3 p.m. (2 p.m. GMT).

This Monday noon took place the draw of Champions League Round of 16a few days after the conclusion of the group stage of the most prestigious of competitions.

However, following the scandal that exploded, this draw will have to be redone. So there might not be a reunion between Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, or a clash between Bayern and Atlético.

The main change:

No more goal counts double away. For the first time since UEFA’s decision, goals will no longer count double when scored away in the final stages of European competition.

Some important rules:

– During the draw for the round of 16, no team can fall on an opponent playing in the same championship as him. PSG cannot therefore fall on Lille

– No team can fall on the one who finished first or second in his group during the group stage. Impossible to see Lille fall on Salzburg, or PSG on Manchester City.

Dates for the round of 16:

The knockout stages of the Champions League will take place over a month. Two weeks will be devoted to the first leg matches (Tuesdays and Wednesdays 15, 16, 22 and 23 February) and two weeks to the return matches (8, 9 and 15, 16 March).

Qualifiers for the Round of 16:

– The seeded ones: Bayern Munich (GER), Juventus (ITA), Liverpool (ING), Lille (FRA), Manchester City (ING), Manchester United (ANG) and Real Madrid (ESP).

– Second in the group: Atletico Madrid (ESP), Benfica (POR), Chelsea (ING), Inter (ITA), Paris Saint-Germain (FRA), Salzburg (AUT), Sporting CP (POR) and Villarreal (ESP).
