Red Wings: Several new faces on the ice and behind the bench

After the 2022 NHL Draft, the opening of the free agent market and several staff moves during the offseason, NHL.com is profiling the various teams for the 2022-23 season, which begins on October 7. Today, the Detroit Red Wings.

Copp, 28, signed a five-year contract on July 13 after setting career highs in goals (21), assists (32) and points (53) in 72 games with the Jets. of Winnipeg and the New York Rangers last season. Copp fills a need at second center behind Dylan Larkin, his former teammate at the University of Michigan, and he can play on special teams. Chiarot meanwhile agreed to a four-year deal on July 13, after equaling his personal best in goals (9) and setting new career highs in assists (17) and points (26) in 74 games with the Montreal Canadiens and Florida Panthers last season. The 31-year-old is a defensive-minded defenseman who makes the Red Wings blue line more imposing at 6-foot-3, 234 pounds, and is likely to play to the left of a young defenseman: Moritz Seider ( 21 years old) or Filip Hronek (24).

Husso, 27, signed a three-year contract on July 8, after being acquired from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2022 draft (Aleksanteri Kaskimaki). Husso, who went 25-7-6 with a 2.56 goals-against average, .919 save percentage and two shutouts in 40 games (38 starts) with the Blues last season, should share the task with Alex Nedeljkovic. Perron signed a two-year contract on July 13 after recording 57 points (27 goals, 30 assists) in 67 games with the Blues last season. Perron, who won the Stanley Cup with St. Louis in 2019, fills a need on the right wing, particularly on the power play. He had 26 points (11 goals, 15 assists) in that facet of the game in 2021-22.

Kubalik signed with the Red Wings for two years on July 13. The 26-year-old had 32 points (15 goals, 17 assists) in 78 games with the Chicago Blackhawks last season. He had scored 30 goals with the Blackhawks in his rookie season in 2019-20. Maatta, 27, signed a one-year contract on July 14 after having eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 66 games with the Los Angeles Kings last season. Like Chiarot, Maatta is an imposing defensive back (6-2, 210) and he should form a duo with Seider or Hronek.

As for Lalonde, he was hired on June 30 to replace Jeff Blashill. The 49-year-old has served as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning for the past four seasons. He won the Stanley Cup in 2020 and 2021.

Staal signed a one-year contract with the Florida Panthers on July 13, having had 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) in 71 games last season. Greiss took charge of St. Louis for a year on July 13. He was 10-15-1 with a 3.66 GAA and .891 save percentage in 31 games (28 starts) last season.

Gagner, who is still an unrestricted free agent, had 31 points (13 goals, 18 assists) in 81 games in 2021-22. DeKeyser, also an unrestricted free agent, spent his 10-year career in his hometown of Detroit. He had 11 assists in 59 games last season.

They knock on the door

Edvinsson, who signed a three-year rookie contract on April 24, will have the chance to earn a spot with the Red Wings. The 19-year-old will represent Sweden at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship (WJC) in Edmonton from August 9-20. Edvinsson, drafted sixth overall in 2021, was a finalist for Swedish Elite League (SHL) Rookie of the Year last season, having tallied 19 points (two goals, 17 assists) in 44 games with Frolunda.

Berggren, 22, was drafted in the second round (33rd overall) in the 2018 draft. He led the Griffins in Grand Rapids, the Red Wings’ farm club in the American Hockey League (AHL), with 64 points (21 goals, 43 assists) in 70 games last season. Soderblom, 21, was drafted in the sixth round (159th) in 2019. He had 33 points (21 goals, 12 assists) in 52 games with Frolunda in 2021-22. He signed a three-year rookie contract on June 9.

Needs

General manager Steve Yzerman said he was happy with his training. In the short term, the new Red Wings coaches will need to determine the formation they intend to employ with returning and new players, and they will also need to build chemistry between everyone.
