recruitment by means of his ambitions?

Triple champion of France in title, Asvel now intends to pass a course on the European scene and reach the play-offs of the Euroleague. For this, Tony Parker’s club repatriated Nando de Colo to France, double winner of the competition and MVP of the season in 2016. Enough to achieve the objectives? Back on the movements of the Rhodanian off-season and analysis of the workforce.

Nando De Colo headlining the Asvel project

Tony Parker was clear about Asvel’s ambitions for the 2022-2023 season by bringing Nando De Colo back: “In 2013, we won together the first title of European champions in the history of the French team. In 2023, I hope we can win the first Euroleague title in history with ASVEL. » High objectives by the president of Asvel which shows the desire to be close to the summits of the continent.

For this, the triple champion of France has therefore decided to bet on the French Nando De Colo, from Fenerbahce Istanbul. The double winner of the Euroleague in 2016 and 2019 with CSKA Moscow arrives in the Rhône to finally advance the club on the European continent. The 35-year-old leader still averaged almost 12 points in the Euroleague last season, along with 4 assists. The Northerner will bring his leadership and his experience of major events in order to supervise the rest of the workforce who may lack it. There is no doubt that the 2013 European champion and 2021 Olympic vice-champion will take his role in the club of his former teammate in the France team to heart. However, he won’t be able to do it all on his own…

A recruitment policy focused on the French

Since Tony Parker took power in 2014, Asvel has always kept the same guideline in its recruitment. A political bet on French players, not hesitating to give a chance to players in need of playing time in the NBA or in search of recovery. And for this 2022-2023 season, the tricolor framework will always be present. Around Nando De Colo, the club decided to bring back Amine Noua, left for Andorra last summer from his training club but who returns after a mixed experience in Liga ACB. But the other big blow in the recruitment of Asvel remains the signing for 2 years ofYves Pons, straight from the Memphis Grizzlies. The 23-year-old winger, European U16 champions, will play his first season in Europe and hopes to launch his career after a last season spent between the NBA and the G-League. A bet for the Rhodanian management team which recalls the arrival 2 years ago of Guershon Yabusele. In an elite Betclic in constant progression and the Euroleague, Yves Pons will have enough to prove his talent. Lyon-Villeurbanne can also always count on Charles Kahudi and Antoine Diot, loyal to the club. Doubts remain regarding Paul Lacombe. The child of the country could well see elsewhere during the summer, even if the back is still under contract.

Smart recruitment

In addition to repatriating Nando De Colo, Amine Noua and Yves Pons, Asvel also brought in several interesting players, who came to the Rhône to take a step forward. Already seen in France in Pro B (Saint-Quentin and elected MVP of the season), Parker Jackson-Cartwright joins the three-time French champion, after a successful season with Bonn in Germany, where the point guard was voted Bundesliga MVP. He will have the heavy task of replacing Chris Jones, who left for Valencia. Retin Obasohan, Belgian international, will also strengthen the Villeurbannaises back lines. Coming from Hapoel Jerusalem, the winger will bring scoring and volume of play.

Asvel also tries a bet with the arrival of the Swiss Anthony Polite. Not drafted, the 25-year-old winger has just launched his professional career in Europe and will have to make his place in an already well-stocked position. Because on the outside lines, TJ Parker has set his sights on Jonah Matthews, who played this season in Wroclaw (Poland). The rear was 18 points 4 rebounds and 4 assists in the Polish league, to the point of hitting the eye of Fenerbahce Istanbul during the season. The American will share playing time on positions 1 and 2 with Nando De Colo and Parker Jackson-Cartwright.

Enough to aim for the Euroleague play-offs?

With all its recruits, to which must also be added David Lighty and Youssoupha Fall, still at the club, can Asvel aim for the top 8 of the Euroleague? If the rear lines seem doubled or even tripled, the interior sector leaves something to be desired. With only 2 players over 2m (Y.Fall and A.Noua), positions 4 and 5 still need to be reinforced. The shortcomings seen for 2 years in the Euroleague inside could prevent the Villeurbannais from getting involved in the fight for the play-offs. A weakness which could turn out to be too important at the present time, so much the large European stables are equipped in this sector. By way of comparison, AS Monaco, also involved in the Euroleague, has a solid domestic sector with Donta Hall, Domantas Motiejunas or Adrien Moerman.

If one or even 2 players should still arrive at Asvel, there is no doubt that the triple champion of France will target positions 4 and 5 to come and reinforce the current weakness of the club.

Asvel’s squad for the 2022-2023 season

Nando De Colo, Amine Noua, Retin Obasohan, Parker Jackson-Cartwright, David Lighty, Antoine Diot, Paul Lacombe, Jonah Matthews, Anthony Polite, Youssoupha Fall, Yves Pons, Charles Kahudi, TJ Parker.

If Asvel hit hard by signing for 2 years Nando De Colo, the current workforce still seems unbalanced and still needs to be reinforced. If the duel with AS Monaco in Betclic Élite still promises to be intense, the reality and the demands of the Euroleague could come and put the Villeurbannais back on the ground.
