Eredivie Ranking 2022-2023

The Eredivisie is only open to clubs with professional status who, after fulfilling all the necessary criteria, have obtained a one-year license to play at this level (professional league). It has had several official names, given temporarily by the sponsors: PTT-telecompetitie (1990-1999), KPN-Telecompetitie (1999/2000), KPN Eredivisie (2000-2002), Holland Casino Eredivisie (2002-2005), since 2005 like Eredivisie.

Operation of the Eredivisie: European places and accession

The competition consists of 34 home and away matches between the teams. Each pair of teams play two games against each other – one as the home team and one as the guest team. Since the 1956/1957 season.

The champion and the vice-champion of the Netherlands win the right to participate in the qualifications for the Champions League. The teams placed third and fourth earn the right to participate in the Europa League as well as the winner of the Dutch Cup. The team ranked last will be relegated to the Eerste divisie. Additionally, the penultimate two Eredivisie teams and the 8 Eerste Divisie teams are vying for two Eredivisie promotion spots.

In the event of a tie on points, the final classification is determined by the result of the two matches between the teams, followed in the event of a draw by the goal difference of the direct match, then by the overall goal difference achieved over the season, the greatest number of goals scored and finally by draws.

Ajax and PSV: the giants of Dutch football

L’Amsterdam Ajax is historically the biggest club in the Netherlands, having won the competition 28 times. In front of his rival PSV Eindhoven who was champion 24 times.

Since 2010, alone Twente and the Feyenoord Rotterdam succeeded, once each, in stopping the domination of the two biggest Dutch clubs.

At European level, Ajax is the 6th most successful club with 4 Champions League on the clock, only one less than Barça and one more than Manchester United. PSV won it once, in 1988, beating Benfica on penalties in the final.
