No to the 2022 Champions Trophy in Tel Aviv! – Ummah

This year again, the Professional Football League has decided to renew the holding of the next edition of the Champions Trophy in Israel.

This official meeting between Paris Saint-Germain, champion of France 2022, and FC Nantes, winner of the Coupe de France 2022, is scheduled for Sunday July 31, at the Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv.1

As for the previous edition, the LFP is organizing this event with Sylvan Adams, Israeli-Canadian businessman, “self-proclaimed ambassador of the State of Israel”2and Comtec Group, an Israeli event production company whose clients include the Israeli government and companies based in illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank3. For several years, Sylvan Adams has been investing in high-level sport to change and enhance the image of Israel.4

We strongly oppose the holding of this meeting in Israel. This is a sportwashing event aimed at “whitewashing”, through sport, military occupation, colonization, the apartheid system of the Israeli state and its crimes.

Since the start of 2022 alone, Israeli occupying forces have killed nearly 60 Palestinians5. Among the victims are in particular 2 journalists – the star reporter of Aljazeera Shireen Abu Akleh and Ghufran Warasneh – as well as 16 teenagers including 2 young footballers Mohammad Ghneim and Thaer Yazouri.

At the same time, Israeli colonization continues. Imprisonments, threats of imminent deportation and attacks by settlers have intensified.
Israel’s Supreme Court has ruled that nearly 1,000 Palestinians can be driven out of their villages in Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, to have their land converted into a new settlement area. military training, while the government approves a project to build 4,500 homes in illegal settlements. 6

Israel continues to hold 4,450 prisoners, including 160 children. 600 are in administrative detention, i.e. without charge or trial, such as the Franco-Palestinian lawyer Salah Hamouri who has been arbitrarily detained since March 2022. Since the beginning of the year, the occupying forces have arrested more than 2,140 Palestinians. s, largely in occupied Jerusalem and Jenin. 7

Israeli settlers, protected by soldiers, carried out 133 attacks against Palestinians and their properties in the West Bank 5.

A year after the last murderous attack by the Israeli army on the Gaza Strip, nothing has really changed. The territory is still under illegal blockade. Few buildings have been rebuilt. Gaza remains an open-air prison, still subject to regular Israeli bombardments. Thousands of Gazan children suffer from mental trauma.8

The right to return of millions of refugees, voted by the UN, is still not respected by the State of Israel, which continues to keep the inhabitants of the refugee camps in misery e s, whether in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Jordan, etc. and to suppress their resistance in the occupied territories such as recently in Jenin and Hebron.

These dramas are part of the continuity of several decades of colonial policy and apartheid vis-à-vis the Palestinian people 9. Playing this match in Tel Aviv would help mask these realities.

We refuse to see French football and these two teams being complicit in Israeli violations of international law and Palestinian human rights.

Recently, the LFP took a strong decision by stopping the broadcasting of Ligue 1 in Russia to sanction its illegal invasion and its war of aggression in Ukraine.10

We urge Mr. Vincent Labrune, President of the LFP, Mr. Waldemar Kita, owner and president of FC Nantes, and Mr. Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, Chairman and CEO of Paris Saint-Germain, to relocate this meeting to France or to move it to another country. We call on players and staff members to join us in supporting our request.
