LBE | Brest goes on board again

On this Wednesday, the Brest Bretagne Handball girls returned to training. With many new faces, but also ambitions in shambles.

It was on this Wednesday morning that Pablo Morel’s players returned to training. The staff had concocted for the twenty players, including neo-pros, a playful session, just to get back in a good mood. Only Aissatou Kouyaté was missing, injured at the start of 2022 in the knee and still undergoing rehabilitation. The left-hander should regain the championship before the end of 2022.

This year, only two young people from the BBH training center joined the pro group: Pétra Marinovic and Mathilde Cayez. It is a wish of the club in the future to work more on the integration of young people into the professional group, in order to integrate as many as possible.

For the moment, no captain has yet been chosen. Among the senior players destined for this kind of position, we will be able to see emerge during the preparation in addition to Coralie Lassource already captain this season, players like Pauline Coatanéa, Cléopatre Darleux, Djina Jaukovic. However during this preparation, the staff leaves the door open to good surprises.

Many different profiles

In this new team, we find a lot of diversity, as much with regard to the age of the players, their experience, but also the diversity of the training countries. A beautiful trio of pivots will be honored with Pauletta Foppa, Merel Freriks (photo, Netherlands) and Tatjana Brnovic (Montenegro).

Also among the novelties, the championship will take place in the form of a dry championship, therefore without play-offs or final. A significant impact for Pablo’s daughters who will not have the right to make mistakes in this difficult championship where 6 teams from the French championship will play in the European championship. “The championship formula requires consistency. We will have to be ready from start to finish, this is not a trivial change. It’s also good because it will be the most consistent club that will be champions of France.notes Pablo Morel, whose daughters were dominated by Metz last season.

A defensive base to find

If Brest had until now a solid defensive base, the summer departures and arrivals will require a little work to find the automatisms. “We want to have a real foundation in the sector, the intentions will be the same with different weapons” still supports Morel, who this summer lost Tonje Loseth and Kalidiatou Niakaté, two defensive masterpieces. Conversely, the workforce will have many more shooters from afar, an asset that may have been missing last season. The weapons are competent but different.

At the end of the 2021/2022 season, with geopolitical problems, a multitude of big names in handball playing in Russia found themselves on the market. However, no agreement was reached between one of them and the Brest club. Over the next few years, in addition to making the club more attractive through its track record, the club’s management is thinking about alternatives so that the club is not reduced to a geographical pitfall.

After a stop at the gates of Final4 in Budapest last year, the club really wants to pass this stage as in 2020/2021. “The goal is to win the Champions League, maybe not this season, but eventually. We are also going to replay the Coupe de France that we had dropped last season, as well as the championship, because that is what keeps us alive. If we don’t finish in the top two, there will be no Champions League. explains an ambitious president Le Saint, who aims to sell out the Arena for most of the season.

For this pre-season preparation, the BBH has used its relations to create a training camp with Gyor, where the girls will fly away on August 9, before returning to France on August 14. A confrontation with Mérignac at La Roche sur Yon will follow. . Before finishing in Finistère with the Caraty challenge where the teams from Nantes and Paris 92 will be present. The start of the championship is announced for September 3.
