Brest Ligue 1 – 2022/2023: Squad, transfers and goals for the season

For its 4th straight season in the elite of French football, Stade Brestois will try to aim higher than its 11th place last season. Steve Mounier’s teammates have done better than the maintenance by knocking on the doors of the top 10. For this new season, Michel Der Zakarian and his players will have to confirm their good performance of the past season while being more ambitious. How will Stade Brestois approach this 2022-2023 season?

Last season review

Stade Brestois had a great 2021-2022 season, occupying 11th place in the general classification. With the objective at the start of last season to stay in Ligue 1, Brest surprised with its fighting spirit and its collective game. With a record of 13 wins, 9 draws and 16 losses for 48 points, the club did as well as outgoing champion Lille 10th in the standings. But the men of Der Zakarian had the means to do better. With the Franck Honorat-Steve Mounier duo in attack, 20 goals between them, Brest managed to beat Lille and Marseille. Reference matches that allowed them to quickly validate their maintenance and aim higher in the rankings. Unfortunately, limited by a very average workforce, they could not end the season well as they had started.

The movements of the off-season

Arrivals : With a view to remaining in Ligue 1, Stade Brestois has shown itself to be a bit ambitious on the transfer market. He quickly secured the services of the young French striker prodigy, Karamoko Dembélé (19) who was in difficulty on the side of Celtic in Scotland. Then it was the turn of the attacking midfielder of Angers Mathias Pereira (25 years old), Naoh Fadiga 22 years old from Héraclès Almelo, and Youssef Belaïli (30 years old) free since his departure from Quatar FC to join the Brest workforce.

Departures : Stade Brestois has lost quite a few players in order to balance its finances. Some at the end of the contract had to find another destination and others on loan or sold also left the club. Here is the list of players who will not play Brest next season:

Ambitions and ranking

Stade Brestois has, for 4 years, managed to stay in Ligue 1. If the other years, the main objective was to ensure the maintenance, it is clear that with their recruitment, the leaders of the club hope to appear better this season. The goal would therefore be to secure a European place. For this, the club can count on their giant Beninese striker Steve Mounier and also and especially on the club’s young recruit, Karamoko Dembélé. An attack that already makes supporters and fans of the club dream. As a reminder, Steve Mounier scored 9 goals last season and seems determined to reach the 15-goal mark this time around. There is no doubt that with such a total, the club would be forced to nurture other better ambitions than simple maintenance.

The player to watch

Announced 2 years ago as the future star of French football, Karamoko Dembele got a bit lost over the months. After his sensational debut in the Scottish championship in the Celtic club, the young 19-year-old striker could not confirm. He even lost his starting spot last season. A poor performance that prompted him to return home to France to revive. In Brest, he has all the cards to progress and above all to show everyone the immense talent attributed to him. This season, he will be the number 1 attraction at Stade Brestois.

Calendar for the 2022-2023 season

During the first day of the championship, Stade Brestois will be opposed to Lens before receiving OM on behalf of the second day. Then, they will have to make a most complicated trip to the field of the outgoing champion, PSG, on 09/11/22 during the 7th day. Brest will end the year with the reception of Lyon on 28/12/22.

The players of Der Zakarian will continue with a trip to Monaco on 01/01/23 for the 17th day. They will meet PSG on March 12, Nice on April 16 and Marseille on May 27 during the 37th and penultimate day. Finally, Brest will be opposed at home to Rennes for the closing of the championship. This is essentially what awaits Brest in the months to come.
