Angers Ligue 1 – 2022/2023: Squad, transfers and goals for the season

Since its return to the elite of French football in 2015, SCO Angers has always been able to find the resources necessary to maintain itself. Subscriber to the mid-table, Angers had a somewhat complicated 2021-2022 season. 14th with a record of 10 wins, 11 draws and 17 losses, Gérald Baticle’s players fought until the last moments of the championship to avoid relegation. How will they approach this new season?

Last season review

SCO Angers started the season very well with 3 wins and 1 draw in the first 4 days. Everything seemed to be going well until February when Sofiane Boufal’s teammates experienced a dark period with 7 defeats in a row. A poor performance which contrasts with the good start to the season for the Angevins. The club’s European ambitions quickly gave way to a fierce struggle to maintain it. With 15 points taken in 10 games, SCO Angers finished 14th in the general classification with 41 points on the clock. A starving record that does not satisfy club president Saïd Chabane who was aiming for at least the top 10.

The movements of the off-season

SCO Angers is one of the most active French clubs on the transfer market. With 19 arrivals for 21 departures, Angers is trying to reorganize its workforce for the coming season. In this wave of movements, the Angevins lost 3 of their star players. Indeed, Jimmy Cabot (2M€), Angelo Fulgini (7M€) and Mohamed Ali Cho (12M€), left the club to join Lens, Mainz and La Real Sociedad respectively. The 30-year-old Cameroonian striker Stéphane Baoken is also leaving the club free of any contract and is joining the Turkish club Kasimpasa SK. On the arrivals side, we can note the signing of: Halid Sabonovic (Def), Adrien Hunou (Att) and the 2 Africans Ulrich Eneme Ella (Gabon) and Abdallah Sima (Senegal), both from Brighton & Hove Albion . Loïs Diony, loaned to St Etienne, is also returning to the Angers squad.

Ambitions and ranking

With the many departures from the club, especially some important players like Angelo Fulgini and Mohamed Ali Cho, the Angevins will have to revise their ambition downwards. If the objective was to grab a European place, everything suggests that maintaining it becomes the priority. Any other result or a national trophy would be unexpected. Will they do better than last season and their 14th place? One thing is certain, the task promises to be very difficult.

player to watch

With the departure of Mohamed Ali Cho for Spain, Sofiane Boufal will have the heavy burden of carrying the Angevin attack single-handedly. Even if the return of Loïs Diony, loaned to St Etienne last season, would be a great help in attack, all the hopes of the club rest on Boufal. As a reminder, the 28-year-old Moroccan player finished as the club’s top scorer and best player last season with 8 goals and 4 assists. He is without a doubt the player to follow this season on the side of SCO Angers.

Calendar for the 2022-2023 season

For their entry into the running, SCO Angers will host FC Nantes at the Raymond Copa stadium. A month later, on the 6th day, the Angevins will undergo their first test match against Olympique Lyonnais, during a trip to Groupama Stadium. Then, they will have to face Montpellier and Nice respectively before receiving Olympique de Marseille for the 9th day. On January 11, 2023, Angers will challenge the defending champion, PSG, in a match that promises to be very complicated. The return match will be played on February 26, 2023, during the 32nd day of the championship. Then, SCO Angers will first face Monaco and then Olympique de Marseille, respectively on the 34th and 35th day.

In a possible duel for the maintenance in league 1, SCO Angers will be opposed to the Stade de Reims then later to Troyes during the 36th and 37th day. Finally, the Angevins will find FC Nantes on the occasion of the final day of the Ligue 1 championship version 2022-2023.

This is the essence of what awaits SCO Angers fans for this new Ligue 1 season, 2022-2023, the top of which will be given on August 6. Like the other clubs, Angers is sharpening its weapons to have a great campaign and achieve its goals for the season. For this, the players of Gérald Baticle will have to show consistency against the teams at the bottom of the table and not be ridiculous against the big names to hope to remain in the elite of French football.
