Like on a railway line, football can hide behind a great talent another player with great potential. While Erling Braut Haaland had exploded during the 2018 season with Molde before breaking everything in Salzburg and Dortmund, Molde is undoubtedly holding his new prodigy with David Datro Fofana. Formed on the side of Abidjan City, the Ivorian phenomenon had signed in Molde in February 2020 and many clubs had positioned themselves. As we revealed to you at the time, this versatile striker capable of playing up front or on the wings had caught the eye of Belgian and Dutch clubs, but also of three Ligue 1 teams. Among them Angers, but the transfer was unsuccessful and David Datro Fofana opted for Molde where he signed until December 2024.
In an interview for Nordiskhe reconsidered this choice: “At first I really liked what Angers offered me. But Molde was a real crush for me. In the past I have come before and the way I was received made me change my mind and it made my heart lean towards the Molde team. Like a fish in water, the one who was summoned to the Ivorian selection in November 2020 when he was not yet 18 years old arrived with the label of future prodigy of his country. Indeed, before joining Norway, David Datro Fofana came out of a full season with 6 goals and 5 offerings with AFAD where he was on loan. Slowly integrating into the workforce, he had a very interesting 2021 season with 3 goals and 3 offerings in 26 matches where he mainly served as a substitute. However, the situation continued to develop positively for him.
In the footsteps of Erling Braut Haaland?
Holder since the start of the season, David Datro Fofana has been walking on water for almost two months. It’s simple, he remains on 8 goals and 3 offerings in the last 10 matches in all competitions, including a big performance against Bodø / Glimt (3-1) with a goal and an assist. This Sunday, July 10 against Tromsø (5-1), he released his most successful performance with a double and an offering which allowed Molde to overtake Lillestrøm in order to take the lead in the championship. The 19-year-old particularly amazed his world like his opponent Ruben Yttergård Jenssen. “It’s Fofana…I don’t know how they found him, but he’s really strong. I think it must be one of the best in the Eliteserien (Norwegian D1)» did he let go Discovery +. His coach Erling Moe was also amazed: “You see there is huge potential in the boy with the ball. What he does on that goal we’ve already seen in training, but we’ll probably have to work on structuring him off the ball. We are on the right track. All the credit goes to him.”
Molde coach since April 2019, Erling Moe had previously been interim and assistant coach to a certain Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before he left for Manchester United. He therefore had Erling Braut Haaland under his command. And even if the profiles are different, the 51-year-old technician recognizes that there are some similarities. It is difficult to draw lines between two such players. They are two different people. Fofana came to us very young and he spent a lot of time getting to know himself, both with football and everything else. It shows more and more progress. It was a bit like that with Erling too. He spent time building his body and personality, like Fofana does now. Right there, I see some similarities he explained to TV2.
David Datro Fofana is inspired by Didier Drogba
If the parallel is flattering, Erling Moe believes that David Datro Fofana should not forbid anything and continue to work as he does now. While explaining that there is no hurry for the young 19-year-old Ivorian: “We have seen that most things are possible when you play Molde. Erling has just prepared for Manchester City, so why not? As long as he works hard in everyday life and wants to improve every day, that’s a pretty realistic goal, but he still has a lot to prove here in Molde as well. He needs to fight at a good level and then we’ll see where it goes. I don’t think we should start advertising Chelsea, Barcelona and others.”
The main interested party does not budge and intends to continue to make an impression. With 6 league goals, he is two behind Veton Berisha (Viking), Alioune Ndour (Haugesund) and Amahl Pellegrini (Bodø / Glimt) in the championship scorers’ standings. Presenting himself as a credible outsider and preparing to play the second qualifying round of the Europa League Conference with Molde, David Datro Fofana will have a lot to do this season. Winner of the Norwegian Cup last season and aiming for the national title for this exercise, he does not lose sight of his career objective. “Chelsea have been my favorite club since I was little. Drogba played there, so they have always been my club. So it’s my dream” he explained to TV2. Ambitious and successful, David Datro Fofana is currently making everyone agree in the land of the midnight sun.
