2022 Suzuka 8 Hours: Honda HRC’s monstrous record in qualifying, YART-Yamaha fast, Sylvain Guintoli out.

Tetsuta Nagashima prints the first 2’04” of the Suzuka 8 Hours race weekend, as Niccolò Canepa enters the 2’05” club as the fastest Yamaha rider ever.

Sporadic showers of light rain disrupted official qualifying for the 2022 Suzuka 8 Hours on Friday. A problem for many, a nuisance for others, no worries for others. This is the case of Tetsuta Nagashima» captain » of Team HRC for the 43rd edition of the » race of races “, capable of signing the first 2’04” in the history of the 8 hours during the first qualifying session. With a time of 2’04″942, the winner of the 2020 Moto2 Grand Prix of Losail rewrote the new record of the Roller Coaster circuit during an 8-hour race weekend, taking pole on behalf of the Honda #33 for tomorrow’s Top 10 Trial.

MONSTER CHRONO BY HONDA HRC WITH NAGASHIMA
As an HRC test rider of the MotoGP, Superbike and 8h Suzuka projects, Tetsuta Nagashima has carved furrows on this track for the past two years. Every two weeks he ran numerous tests, taking measurements for today’s time that went down in history. His 2’04” 942 not only beats the previous record of Jonathan Rea of 2018 (2’05”168), but reaffirms the ambitions of the Honda HRC. It will be his, alongside Takumi Takahashi and Iker Lecuonato attack a victory which, for the firm with the golden wing, has been lacking since 2014.

CANEPA IN THE HISTORY OF THE SUZUKA 8 HOURS
If the record of Nagashima puts the Honda HRC in the lead of the qualifications, the YART Yamaha is second thanks to Niccolo Canepa. With 2’05″863, he not only achieved the second absolute time of the day, but also touched up his own Italian record at 8 hours. In a crazy lap, the 2016/2017 EWC World Champion did 3/10 better than Alex Lowes (Kawasaki KRT), establishing himself as the fastest Yamaha rider ever in an 8-hour race weekend. Better than the 2’05” 922 of Katsuyuki Nakasuga (Yamaha Factory) from 2019, back to » 2’05 club » in the company of the same quadruple winner of the 8 hours, Jonathan Reaof Leon Haslam and, specifically, Tetsuta Nagashima.

REA STOPPED BY RAIN
If the rain allows it, Niccolo Canepa tomorrow will be the second Italian driver after Valentino Rossi to be able to attend the Top 10 Trial, old-style Superpole with a flying lap for 2 drivers chosen by each of the 10 best teams from the official qualifications. This circumstance will in fact be the hypothetical first qualifying round of the weekend for Jonathan Rea. Indeed, the rain disrupted the two qualifying sessions of the ” red group», where the six-time Superbike world champion is back, so much so that the third position in qualifying for Kawasaki KRT is the result of the average time between Leon Haslam (2’06″ 409) and Alex Lowes (2’06″ 204 ). More than just lap times, for the holders of the trophy, the concern is generated by the extraordinary level of competitiveness shown so far by the Honda HRC. So, as always, the 8 hours is a story in itself…

THE TOP 10 SUZUKA 8 HOURS TRIAL
Also in the Top 10 Trials are the Astemo Honda Dream SI Racing team of legendary Shinichi Ito, FCC TSR Honda, the winners of the 24h of Spa BMW Motorrad World Endurance (crazy qualifying with Dunlops!), Sakurai Honda, SDG Honda Racing, Honda Suzuka and EVA 01 TRICK STAR Kawasaki. A format which in practice has not been organized at Suzuka since 2016: in 2017/2018 modified due to the threat of rain, in 2019 canceled due to the passage of a typhoon.

YOSHIMURA SERVES WITHOUT GUINTOLI
Outside the Top 10, we find not only Kawasaki SRC, but also and above all the reigning world champion and championship leader Yoshimura SERT Motul. Like Rea, Kazuki Watanabe did what he could with a few drops of rain in both red group sessions, but that’s not the main issue. Sylvain Guintoli, following a fall during practice on Tuesday, did not ride today and will be forced to forfeit the race. The Suzuki GSX-R 1000 n°1 will therefore only be driven by Kazuki Watanabe and Gregg Blackthe latter having already been recalled to replace Xavier Simeontested positive for COVID-19.
